Frog Madam

After infesting the yard with these things:

Pretty front yard scene or scene of frog love frenzy?

This is what I get:

Only less pretty and photogenic and far away.

According to the information page on Bromeliaceae at clarku.edu:
"Many frogs and insects lay their eggs in the pools of bromeliads, and other, smaller organisms spend their entire lives in pools, making them functioning ecosystems."

This is really quite cool; a self contained universe in a beautiful cup.  I LOVE learning new things.  But I can learn from books, people - no need for hands on!

  1. I didn't know that about frogs in bromeliads, but when we first moved into our house in Hawai'i Kai, the previous owners had left dozens and dozens of bromeliads and they were all breeding mosquitoes. I went around to each plant and sprayed Pam cooking oil into them -- prevents the development of the larvae or some such thing. I still kind of dislike bromeliads because of that though.
